Let’s look into the data from Jobstreet. We analyze the current job demand in Malaysia (November 2017) comprising of 13 specializations:
Most common jobs
Based on the analysis (Figure 1), the most common jobs in Malaysia in November 2017 are sales and marketing jobs, followed by computer/IT, admin/HR, manufacturing, engineering and services.
Figure 1. The graph showing the job specializations (x-axis) against the number of jobs (y-axis) in Malaysia.
There is about twice as much the number of sales/marketing jobs compared to the computer/IT jobs in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the other five jobs are quite balanced in number, led by the admin/HR jobs.
We look into several job specializations and see which type of jobs has the most demand.
Figure 2. The type and number of jobs in Sales and Marketing
In sales and marketing specialization, the marketing/business development job is the most sought-after job with 1954 jobs available.
Now let`s look into Computer/IT specialization.
Figure 3. The type and number of jobs in Computer/IT
Software jobs are more sought-after compared to the network (and admin) and hardware jobs. There are 73% more software jobs compared to network and 6 times more network jobs compared to hardware jobs.
Figure 4. The type and number of jobs in Engineering
The most sought-after engineers are those specialized in mechanical and automotive, followed by electrical and electronics. The environmental, chemical and O&G engineers are not much in demand.
Figure 5. The type and number of jobs in Accounting/Finance
There are high numbers of general and cost accounting jobs, which is nearly double the number of banking and financial jobs. Meanwhile, the number of audits, taxation, corporate finance and investment jobs are comparatively lower.
Least common jobs
Now we look into the job specializations that have lower demand.
Figure 6. Job specializations with lower demands
There are still a number of jobs available for construction, building, arts, media and communications. Meanwhile, sciences jobs have much lower demand. We have to see what type of sciences jobs are available.
Figure 7. The type and number of jobs in Sciences
It’s much more difficult to get jobs in these categories, especially biotechnology and geology/geophysics.
Finally, we look into job locations. Which state or locations have the most jobs?
Figure 8. States with the highest number of jobs
Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have the highest number of jobs available. These two states are followed by Johor and Penang. Now we look into other states or locations.
Figure 9. Number of jobs in other states and locations
Three states have the lowest number of jobs offered, that are Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perlis.
From the analysis, there are several key points:
- Business, Human Resource, IT, Engineering and service are most sought-after job specializations.
- The general/cost accounting jobs have the highest number of vacancy.
- Software engineers are most sought-after in Computer/IT category, maybe due to industry 4.0 and the rise in interest of automation and AI.
- Mechanical/automotive are most sought-after in Engineering category.
- The science specialization jobs have low demand.
